Cullen

Cullen Wines is a founding family of Margaret River and one of the most environmentally committed fine-wine estates in Australia — a biodynamic, carbon-neutral producer whose Cabernet blend, Diana Madeline, sits among the country’s best.

A medical family turned wine pioneers

The estate was founded by Dr Kevin Cullen and Diana Cullen, both trained in medicine, who had taken up a sheep and cattle farm at Wilyabrup in the heart of what is now Margaret River. Acting on the agronomist Dr John Gladstones’ assessment that the region’s maritime climate suited Bordeaux varieties, they planted a trial acre in 1966 and, on its strength, established the vineyard proper in 1971 — making Cullen one of the region’s pioneers alongside neighbouring Vasse Felix.

Diana Cullen taught herself winemaking and earned national recognition at a time when women were rarely acknowledged in Australian wine, serving as head winemaker through the 1980s. In 1989 her daughter Vanya Cullen took over, and under her the estate has become as known for its farming philosophy as its wines.

Farming as the point

Cullen adopted organic methods in 1998, converted fully to biodynamics in 2003, and in 2006 became the first Australian winery certified carbon neutral. For Vanya Cullen this is not a marketing overlay but the core method: the argument is that healthy, living soils and minimal intervention produce fruit of greater purity and site expression — the same low-vigour, site-faithful logic that drives quality across fine wine, pursued to its philosophical end.

The wines

Cullen’s reputation rests on two wines. Diana Madeline — named for the founder — is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (typically around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, in the Bordeaux mould), a wine of structure and depth built to age. Kevin John is a Chardonnay that helped establish Margaret River’s international reputation for the variety.

Margaret River’s gift to Cabernet is its maritime moderation: gravelly loam soils and the cooling influence of two oceans give a longer, gentler ripening than inland regions, so the fruit reaches full phenolic ripeness with supple tannin. In Diana Madeline that shows as ripe cassis and fine structure — Australia’s answer to a fine Médoc, framed by measured oak.
